Galway For Life labels Conference 'a Mockery of Human Rights' 6th November, 2009.
Galway For Life, the human rights group, has slammed the abortion conference hosted by the Irish Centre for Human Rights in NUI, Galway on Thursday last 5th November as a mockery of the very concept of human rights.
Galway For Life spokesperson said that she was shocked to hear the imbalance from all of the formal contributors. She stated “The conference failed to provide any legal academic viewpoint on the right to life of the unborn child nor did it examine the right of legal redress for women hurt by abortion”.
She continued “Despite assurances from spokespersons of the Irish Centre of Human Rights before the event that a balanced debate on the abortion question would be facilitated, the agenda of the conference was changed at the eleventh hour to remove a scheduled question and answer session. This together with a speaker line who all favoured one point of view and the fact that some highly regarded medical doctors in the audience were not given ample opportunity to contribute meant that any semblance of balance was disregarded”
“The fact that this conference was partially paid for by NUI Galway, which of course is funded by the taxpayer means there are serious questions to be answered.”
She continued “ Promoting abortion has nothing to do with encouraging authentic human rights. In fact, it's the complete opposite. Without the right to life, all other rights are meaningless. It’s shocking that the Irish Centre For Human Rights, above all other bodies, would put ideology before the most basic human right of all, the right to life”.
